The difference here is that the smaller dose is desirable for angina; patients should take 10 mg per day only if absolutely needed. Duration of treatment here can be more variable.

There are no contraindications associated with amlodipine other than allergic reaction to it.

The medication can produce a number of side effects, though they are rare and typically mild:

• Edema
• Flushing
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Abdominal pain
• Fatigue
• Heart palpitations
• Sleepiness

The above are not cause for concern unless severe, and typically will stop after the first few weeks of treatment. Women are slightly more likely than men to experience side effects, particularly edema.
